How to get in-state at Universities in Florida:

Getting in-state at universities in Florida is more on the moderate scale versus easy or hard. You must have and be able to showcase that there are no legal ties to any state other than Florida; this is pretty much across the board with all Florida schools. Along with legal ties, for many universities in Florida you have got to be able to financially support yourself a minimum of half of all your expenses; however, how you support yourself is going to be scrutinized. Another common thread is your maintaining of a ‘bona fide domicile’—long story short this means no living in dorms or within on-campus housing as those residences are transient in nature (i.e. dorms are not a permanent residence—you cannot live in the dorms 24/7, every day of the year, for as long as you want).

For Florida schools, you are a good candidate if you:

  • Can financially support yourself for at least over half of all your expenses
  • Do not reside in the dorms
  • Have intentions for FL residency above and beyond school
  • Can remain in FL with limited absences during your domicile period
  • Are able to commit yourself to FL via domiciliary requirements
  • Have some sort of employment in the state (not on-campus or work-study)

Florida Reciprocity Agreements:

Florida is a barely-participating member state of the Academic Common Market which is a limited regional reciprocity agreement among select Southern states. Florida only participates through their graduate programs meaning if you’re coming from or going to Florida as an undergrad, you won’t benefit.
