University of Wyoming In-State Requirements:

This is the only University in Wyoming; it’s a fun school in a remotely populated mostly rural state and if you’re into the outdoors, maybe it’s high on your list of (or should be) of where you want to live and go to college.

Thankfully, it’s also a very do-able place where you can earn in-state residency.  In-state is not for just anybody who wants in-state (that’s every out-of-stater), there are some big things you need to be on board with to be successful.  If you’re on board or open to these criteria below, then you’ll want to explore further—otherwise, give up now and don’t waste your time.

  • You’ve gotta want to be in Wyoming long-term, commit to the state above all others, and plant your flag in Wyoming. If it sounds like you basically need to marry Wyoming, well that’s pretty accurate.  If you just want to date Wyoming, that’s not good enough.  If you want to go steady…that’s close to the minimum required.  Commitment issues?  Your stiff penalty is guaranteed out-of-state tuition forever.
  • You’re going to want to work at least a little bit and you might consider taking a slightly reduced course load
  • Dorms are OK but it’s better if you live off-campus
  • Want to leave Wyoming for every single second school isn’t in session? That’s fine if you don’t want in-state tuition—otherwise plan to be in Wyoming, especially during most of academic breaks.

So far so good?  If so, below are some options you may want to consider as a next step.

University of Wyoming Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:

An annual tuition difference of $10,230 is substantial, that’s worth over two years of in-state tuition!

University of Wyoming Financial Aid:

A couple things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at University of Wyoming:

1) Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that requires your being a tax dependent of somebody OR requires you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency.  This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.  There are some exceptions to this whereby certain awards you can accept during your domicile period but will automatically surrender upon earning in-state status.

2) Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the vastly reduced tuition you will owe.
