University of Oregon In-State Requirements:

University of Oregon-Eugene does a good job of withholding the prospect of in-state status to those who don’t deserve it.  A commitment to the state of Oregon outside of solely or primarily attending school is a must.  UO-Eugene requires during the domicile period a maximum of half-time status, otherwise a person fails to overcome the presumption they are in Oregon for non-educational purposes.  Further, hard documentation of steady gainful employment is a must.  For those wishing to attend full-time school and not work at all during the one year domicile period, you are out of luck and there’s no way around it.  Also expect to pay for at least half of your living expenses, and be ready to prove it.

In general, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is somebody who:

  • firmly wants to plant their flag in Oregon
  • can sever all ties to other states
  • can remain in Oregon throughout the year with limited absences (including very limited absences during academic breaks)
  • is able to or willing to attend school half-time maximum during the domicile period
  • does not live in the dorms
  • is able to work in Oregon
  • is able to get student loans as needed
  • is an adult who is significantly but not fully self-reliant

University of Oregon Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:

An annual tuition difference of $20,970 is substantial, that’s worth over two years of in-state tuition!  This extreme difference helps establish UO-Eugene firmly among the universities with the biggest difference between in-state tuition and out-of-state tuition, rivaled only by a handful of schools.

University of Oregon Financial Aid:

A couple things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at UO-Eugene:

1) Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that requires your being a tax dependent of somebody OR requires you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency.  This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.  There are some exceptions to this whereby certain awards you can accept during your domicile period but will automatically surrender upon earning in-state status.

2) Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the vastly reduced tuition you will owe.

University of Oregon Scholarships:

Stamps Leadership Scholarship

University of Oregon’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship is awarded to five incoming freshmen and covers four years of tuition, room and board, plus a generous “enrichment award” for things such as studying abroad.  This merit-based scholarship was funded by Stamps Family Charitable Foundation and is for Oregon high school graduates. Competition for this scholarship is fierce, requiring a minimum 1240  combined math and critical reading SAT score or 28 ACT composite score, and a 3.85 cumulative high school GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

Diversity Excellence Scholarship

As part of the University’s diversity mission, DES awards $6,500 to students based on, among other criteria, academics, financial need, and racial/ethnic background.

Summit and Apex Scholarships

Applicants to UO are automatically considered for these four-year merit-based scholarships.  Depending on your high school GPA and ACT/SAT scores, you could receive a Summit Scholarship ($9,000/yr nonresident; $6,000/yr resident) or Apex Scholarship ($4,000/yr nonresident; $3,000/year resident).

School of Music and Dance

All students auditioning for the School of Music and Dance are considered for a music scholarship.
