University of Georgia In-State Requirements:

This is absolutely a gap-year school; however, it’s on the easier side of the spectrum in the gap-year category.  This biggest thing you absolutely must be open to is taking year off from school in Georgia either before freshman year (recommended) or after.

Why on earth would I possibly ever consider taking a gap-year?   Great question, here’s some food for thought: Top 6 Gap-Year Pros and Cons for Out-of-State College Hopefuls.

With all that free time on your hands, you have plenty of time and space to work and work you must.  Full-time is certainly encouraged and may be necessary for you in order to pay over half your own way through your domicile year.  You might be able to get away with part-time employment in Georgia but that has to be determined on a case-by-case basis since everybody’s situation is unique.

If you’re open to the idea of a productive gap-year before freshman year or before sophomore year perhaps, then it’s never too soon to start planning and we suggest the following options as a next step.

University of Georgia Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:

An annual tuition difference of $18,210 is substantial. The price of 1 year of out-of-state tuition could buy you 3 years of in-state tuition at UGA.

University of Georgia Financial Aid:

A couple things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at University of Georgia:

  • Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that requires your being a tax dependent of somebody OR requires you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency.  This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.  There are some exceptions to this whereby certain awards you can accept during your domicile period but will automatically surrender upon earning in-state status.
  • Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the vastly reduced tuition you will owe.
