How to get in-state at Universities in Nebraska:

Universities in Nebraska vary when it comes to residency requirements. One of the umbrella items for most all NE colleges hinges on your attendance at university; most schools in the state do not allow full-time attendance during your domicile period (no more than 6 credit hours maximum per term) whereas another school may not allow any attendance whatsoever (Gap Year required). Employment in the state is more or less a requirement across the board for all NE colleges. Another umbrella item for all universities in NE is your ability to prove that you have severed ties with your previous home state (and all other states for that matter), with your ties now strictly and solely belonging to Nebraska (i.e. in what state are you a registered voter?). Another variant factor is actual residence—-one school in Nebraska might allow you to live in the dorms during your domicile period whereas at another college your residence in a dorm would disqualify you from earning in-state.

In general, you are a good candidate for in-state at Nebraska schools if you:

  • Are willing and able to take a Gap Year and/or attend no more than 6 credit hours per term
  • Have some sort of employment in the state of Nebraska
  • Are able to commit yourself to NE via domiciliary requirements
  • Have intentions for NE residency above and beyond school
  • Are willing and able to live off-campus and not in the dorms

Each school is different, so make sure you fully know and understand rules and regulations at your specific school of interest.
