University of Kentucky In-State Requirements:

The University of Kentucky falls on the side of strict when it comes to the easy-to-hard spectrum of obtaining residency and in-state tuition. An absolute and dominant commitment to the state of Kentucky outside of school is necessary in order to obtain residency. This means during your domicile period you must be employed in the state of Kentucky no less than 30 hours per week, and full-time attendance at the school is not allowed during your domicile (no more than 6 credit hours per semester). Not only that, but on-campus residence is not allowed. If you want to attend school full-time and not work at all during the one-year domicile period, then you are out of luck when it comes to obtaining in-state tuition here. Financially speaking you must be able to support yourself and all your expenses 100%. For many, taking a gap-year from school over the domicile period is a wise consideration and the best way to showcase to the school you are in Kentucky for more than just college.

In general, a good candidate for in-state tuition here is a person who:

  • is able to stay in Kentucky during the domicile period with limited absences
  • can sever all ties to other states and establish in Kentucky
  • does not live on-campus
  • is able and willing to attend school half-time maximum
  • a gap-year may be worth consideration, see ISA’s Top 6 Gap-Year Pros and Cons for Out-of-State College Hopefuls
  • can be gainfully employed and meet the school’s minimum weekly hours requirement
  • can financially support self and all expenses 100%

University of Kentucky Out-of-State Tuition vs. In-State Tuition:

An annual tuition difference of $12,270 is nothing to easily dismiss. That annual amount adds up to being a four-year total difference in cost of near $50,000 between in-state and out-of-state tuition.

University of Kentucky Financial Aid:

A few things you need to know about financial aid as it relates to earning in-state residency at UK:

  1. Any financial aid including grants and scholarships that require your being a tax dependent of somebody OR require you to be an out-of-state resident will in general disqualify you from establishing residency.  This means that by accepting such awards, you will be getting no closer to in-state tuition.
  2. Your financial aid is re-assessed after earning in-state status and your Expected Family Contribution will be taken into consideration in light of the reduced tuition you will owe.
  3. If looking at earning residency, then it is important to know that UK has specific criteria you must abide by when it comes to your usage of any refunded FAFSA dollars.
